What Is a Performance-Bred Boerboel? Proof on the Track and in the Ring

Updated: 3 days ago
Short answer: A performance-bred Boerboel is a Boerboel selected, raised and developed for proven working ability, not just pedigree or appearance. At Cold River, proof means results judged at sanctioned events: the 22,039-pound weight-pull world record, the first ADBA ACE weight-pull title earned by a Boerboel, and championship wins in the conformation ring.
What performance-bred means to us
Every breeder can say their dogs are strong. Performance-bred means the claim has been tested in front of judges, under a rulebook, with results anyone can look up. It also means breed type stays intact. A performance Boerboel should still look and act like a Boerboel: calm and confident at home, discerning with strangers and sound in structure.
The proof
Dog | Result |
22,039 lb pull (May 9, 2026); first Boerboel ADBA Weight Pull ACE; first Boerboel ADBA National Champion (2024). See his UPF profile.
22,039 lb pull (May 9, 2026); SABBS Grand Champion; 2026 Boerboel Expo winner, appraised at 92.3. See his UPF profile.
Cold River's Conquest | 21,336 lb pull and first place in the 120+ class at her first event. See the UPF results. |
Cold River's ALUCARD | 17,076 lb pull, MWP and MWPP in the 90 class at her first event. See the UPF results. |
Sun Wukong's offspring are now earning ADBA ACE titles as well, the next generation repeating the result.
How we select
Sun Wukong and Mr. Wednesday came from a litter of 14. We kept seven and evaluated their development, structure, movement, drive, temperament, athletic ability, work ethic, recovery and mental resilience before narrowing the group to two. Selection is the part a pedigree cannot do for you.
How we raise and condition
Puppies start with the Cold River Strong Start program, our early puppy-development program.
Our dogs are fed and conditioned for work. Our Boerboel nutrition page explains how we feed for growth and performance.
Training follows the steps in our dog weight pulling guide: wait for maturity, build slowly and bring each dog to its best competition weight.
Performance and breed type together
Mr. Wednesday stands 29 inches at the shoulder and has won in the conformation ring and on the weight-pull track. That combination is the point. A performance-bred Boerboel should be able to do the work the breed was built for and still meet the standard.
Common questions
Is a performance-bred Boerboel a good family dog?
Yes, with the right home. We expect our dogs to be stable, easy to handle in public and protective at home, the same temperament Sun Wukong shows on and off the track. Our Boerboel temperament FAQ covers family life, children and visitors.
Does my puppy have to compete?
No. Performance breeding gives a puppy the structure, nerve and drive to be a good working companion, whether or not it ever sees a track.
How do I get a Cold River puppy?
Read the Boerboel puppy price FAQ, see available puppies and fill out the puppy application.
