Puppy Price and Buying Questions
Why is there such a wide price range for your puppies?
The price of our puppies depends on several factors: 1) the quality and reputation of the parent Boerboels, and 2) whether breeding rights are included. Breeding rights are handled on a case-by-case basis and incur an extra cost for registration and breeding rights.

Why is there an additional charge for breeding rights? Shouldn't there be a single price?
Offering separate pricing for pet registration and full breeding rights allows us to make pet ownership more affordable. Developing a high-quality genetic foundation requires significant time, effort, and financial investment. By charging more for breeding rights, we ensure that our carefully cultivated genetics are not freely available to everyone at a lower cost. If the additional cost for breeding rights is a concern, there are other breeders who may offer lower prices, though the quality may vary accordingly. Just because you have a dog doesn't mean it should be bred. Breeding should be a thoughtful decision guided by health, temperament, and a breeder's expertise.
How are puppy prices determined?
Puppy pricing is based on the specific pairing and the qualities of each litter. The intended purpose of the puppy also affects pricing.
Do you offer puppy shipping services?
Yes, we arrange shipping to the contiguous 48 U.S. states. International shipping may be available in some circumstances, interested parties should inquire about options. Other options include in-cabin flight nannies (for puppies under 20 lbs) or ground transport for larger pups. Costs vary between $500 to $1,500,and up depending on distance and method. In some cases, we may meet buyers partway to reduce travel time, though this depends on our schedule.

Why do prices vary between puppies?
The pricing model reflects the unique qualities and potential of each puppy. Puppies sold with breeding rights are priced differently from those placed as companion pets with limited registration.
How are puppies transported safely?
Shipping methods depend on the puppy's age, size, and destination. Smaller pups (under 20 lbs) may travel via airline-compliant carriers with a flight nanny. Larger puppies use ground transport services. While logistics can be costly, we prioritize stress-free, climate-controlled travel. We're happy to discuss flexible solutions, including meeting at a midpoint when feasible.
Should I choose a male or female Boerboel?
There’s no automatic right answer here. It depends on your home, experience, existing dogs, goals, and the individual puppy. Some folks come in convinced they need a male or they need a female, but we focus less on labels and more on the individual dog and fit. Temperament, energy, maturity, structure, household dynamics, all matter more than assumptions. Males tend to be larger, while females are often smaller and can sometimes be more agile, but sex alone does not predict temperament. If you already have another dog in the home, sex can also factor into placement. That’s another reason why we push for phone calls. Tell us what you have, what you want, and we can talk through realistic options with you. You still choose; our job is to help make sure that choice sets you and the puppy up for success.
You can meet the dogs in the program on our Males and Females pages.
What’s the best way to reach you?
First and foremost, especially if you’re interested in a puppy, start with the application and then give us a phone call. The application is not considered complete until we have a real phone conversation. The same applies if you fill out our contact information—you can absolutely send it in, but we still need you to pick up the phone and call us. A real conversation helps make sure we’re dealing with real people, lets us understand who you are and what you’re looking for, and gives you the opportunity to understand us and what we’re doing here at Cold River. That simply cannot be conveyed properly through messaging or text alone. We will not place one of our dogs through messaging alone. We have to have a viable, real phone conversation. No phone call, no puppy.
You can also reach Cold River directly through our contact page.
Can you help arrange transportation for my puppy?
Yes, we can help coordinate transport after we’ve spoken with you. Options may include private ground transport or, in some cases, a flight nanny who escorts your puppy on the plane and meets you at the airport. That depends on the puppy’s size, age, and airline restrictions, including applicable weight limits. We discuss all of that by phone once we know who we’re working with and everyone’s on the same page. The goal is always safe, smooth travel for the puppy.
