Short answer: The most weight a single dog has pulled in sanctioned weight-pull competition is 22,039 pounds. Two Boerboels, Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday, each pulled that load on rails at a Unified Pulling Federation (UPF) event on May 9, 2026. It is the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results.

All figures come from the official UPF results sheet. Body weight is the weight recorded at weigh-in. "Per body pound" is the load divided by that weight.

Who holds the record

Sun Wukong and Mr. Wednesday are littermate brothers, born March 18, 2023, and bred, owned, trained and handled by Cold River Boerboels. Sun pulled the load at a competition weight of 164 pounds and Wednesday at 186 pounds. Both were handler withdrawn after the 22,039-pound pull, so the record marks where we stopped, not a limit the dogs reached. The complete account, including the judging and placements, is on our 22,039 lb world record page.

Most weight vs. most weight per pound

Weight pulling recognizes two different kinds of strength. Most Weight Pulled (MWP) is the biggest load moved. Most Weight Pulled per Pound (MWPP) divides the load by the dog's body weight. A 38-pound American Pit Bull Terrier that pulls 18,332 pounds moves more than 480 times its own weight, a remarkable result that a giant breed will not match on a per-pound basis. A 164-pound Boerboel that pulls 22,039 pounds moves the heaviest load. Both awards matter, and they answer different questions. Our dog weight pulling guide explains how each award is scored.

Why surface and organization matter

A fair comparison names the organization, the surface and the equipment. The 22,039-pound pulls were on rails, which allow higher loads than many wheeled or snow setups. That is why we always state the federation and the surface with the number, and why comparing a rail pull with a snow pull is not apples to apples.

Common questions

Is 22,039 pounds a Guinness World Record?

No. Guinness World Records runs its own categories and is not a weight-pull sanctioning body. The 22,039-pound mark is a world record in sanctioned dog weight pull, set under UPF rules and recorded in UPF's official results.

What breed pulls the most weight?

By total load, the Boerboel holds the heaviest sanctioned result. By weight pulled per body pound, smaller bully breeds usually lead. See strongest dog breed by weight pulled for the full breakdown.

How much did the dogs weigh?

Sun Wukong weighed in at 164 pounds and Mr. Wednesday at 186 pounds. Those are their competition weights, the weights where each dog works best. Their off-season house weights run heavier.
