Short answer: By total weight pulled, the Boerboel is the strongest dog breed on record. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday each pulled 22,039 pounds at a sanctioned UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. By weight pulled per body pound, smaller bully breeds such as the American Pit Bull Terrier usually lead.

Two ways to measure strength

"Strongest" depends on what you measure. Total load shows raw power: the most weight a dog can start and move. Weight per body pound shows strength relative to size. Weight-pull organizations recognize both, as Most Weight Pulled and Most Weight Pulled per Pound.

Boerboel

22,039 lb by Cold River's Sun Wukong (164 lb); 134.38 lb per body pound

American Pit Bull Terrier

18,332 lb by JT (38 lb); 482.42 lb per body pound

American Bully

16,065 lb by Makaveli (104 lb); 154.47 lb per body pound

Figures come from the official UPF results sheet for May 9, 2026, on rails. One event is a snapshot, not a ranking of every dog in a breed, but it puts several strong breeds on the same track on the same day.

Why the Boerboel leads on total load

The Boerboel was bred in South Africa as a farm guardian, and the AKC standard calls for strength, suppleness, nimbleness and agility in a large, muscular frame. Mass helps move a heavy load, but mass alone does not pull. A dog also needs sound structure, traction, conditioning and the drive to keep working when the cart is heavy. That is where breeding and development matter.

At the record event, Cold River dogs posted the four heaviest Boerboel pulls ever documented: 22,039 pounds twice, 21,336 pounds by Cold River's Conquest and 17,076 pounds by Cold River's ALUCARD. Conquest and ALUCARD were at their first weight-pull event. All four were bred, owned, raised, trained, conditioned and handled by Cold River Boerboels.

Why small breeds lead per pound

A lighter dog needs to move far less total weight to post a high per-pound score, and compact bully breeds have been selected for pulling for generations. JT, a 38-pound American Pit Bull Terrier, pulled 18,332 pounds, more than 480 times his body weight. That is an outstanding performance, and it is why we never claim the Boerboel wins every measure.

Common questions

Is the Boerboel the strongest dog breed?

By total weight pulled in sanctioned competition, yes. No dog of any breed has a heavier published pull than 22,039 pounds. Per body pound, smaller breeds usually score higher.

How strong is a Boerboel compared with a Cane Corso or Kangal?

Our breed comparisons cover size, build and work for each breed. Start with Boerboel vs other breeds.

Can any Boerboel pull this much?

No. These results come from years of selection, conditioning and training. Most Boerboels will never pull competitively, and a young or unconditioned dog should never be asked to. Our dog weight pulling guide covers safe training.
