Short answer: The Presa Canario and the Boerboel are both powerful, mastiff-type guardians, but the Boerboel is the bigger dog. The Presa comes from the Canary Islands, where it guarded farms and caught and held cattle, and typically weighs about 85 to 125 lb. The Boerboel is a South African farm guardian of 150 to 200 lb. Both need experienced owners. The Presa tends to be the more intense of the two.

Boerboel height comes from the AKC breed standard and weight from the AKC breed weight chart. Typical lifespan reflects what we see in the breed. Presa Canario figures come from the breed standards and AKC resources listed under Sources.

Size and build

Heights are close. The FCI standard sets male Presas at 61 to 66 cm, about 24 to 26 inches, and male Boerboels stand 24 to 27 inches. The difference is weight. The FCI standard puts male Presas at 45 to 57 kg, about 99 to 126 lb, and the AKC weight chart lists the breed at 84 to 110 lb. The AKC lists the Boerboel at 150 to 200 lb. A Boerboel carries more bone and more mass. A Presa is longer in the body and lighter.

Temperament and guarding style

Both are serious guardians. The UKC standard says the Presa's ancestors were brought to the Canary Islands by the Spanish and that the dogs "guarded the farms, helped catch and hold cattle, and exterminated wild or stray dogs." That history shows in a breed that is confident, dominant and often intolerant of strange dogs. The Boerboel is also protective and can be dominant, but the AKC standard asks for a dog that is "calm, stable and confident" and that "should recognize a threat or lack thereof."

More on how Boerboels behave with family, children and visitors is in our Boerboel temperament FAQ.

Training and handling

Neither breed is for a first-time owner. Presas need firm, consistent leadership and a lot of socialization, especially around other dogs. Boerboels are strong-willed through adolescence and need structure from the first day home. For both, early exposure to people, places and other animals is the most important work you will do.

Our puppies start that work early through Cold River HomeStart™, the early foundation every Cold River puppy receives, and our Boerboel training FAQ covers house training, leash work, mouthing and more.

Exercise, work and performance

Both breeds were bred as all-around farm dogs, and both need daily exercise and a job. The Presa's catch-dog history gives it grip and drive. The Boerboel's extra mass and power make it a natural in strength sports like weight pull.

Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.

Health and lifespan

Both are large, heavy breeds, so hip and elbow screening, lean condition and bloat awareness matter. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years. Ask any breeder for health results on both parents. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.

Which breed is right for you?

Choose a Boerboel if:

  • You want a bigger, heavier guardian with more mass and power

  • You want a guardian that stays calm and discerning at home

  • You are interested in strength sports like weight pull

Choose a Presa Canario if:

  • You want a slightly smaller, more compact guardian

  • You have strong experience handling dominant guardian breeds

  • You live where the breed is legal and insurable

Whichever breed you choose, pick a breeder who can show you health results and what their dogs actually do. Our guide on how to choose a Boerboel breeder covers what to ask.

Common questions

Is a Boerboel bigger than a Presa Canario?

Yes, by weight. The heights are similar, but the AKC lists the Boerboel at 150 to 200 lb, while the FCI standard puts a male Presa at about 99 to 126 lb.

Which is the better guard dog?

Both are capable guardians. The Presa tends to be more intense and less tolerant of strange dogs. The Boerboel tends to be calmer and more discerning. The right choice depends on the owner's experience and household.

Is the Presa Canario restricted anywhere?

Yes. The Presa Canario is restricted or banned in some countries and localities, and some insurers and landlords limit it. Check local laws and your insurance before getting either breed.
