Boerboel vs French Bulldog: The Frenchie Thinks It Can Win

Short answer: This one is just for fun. The AKC standard says a French Bulldog must not exceed 28 lb. A Boerboel weighs 150 to 200 lb, so one Boerboel equals about five to seven Frenchies. Both have a bulldog face and bulldog opinions. Both believe the couch belongs to them. Only one of them can take the couch by force.

Size and build
There is no fair way to do this one. The AKC French Bulldog standard says weight is "not to exceed 28 pounds," and anything over 28 is a disqualification. The AKC says Frenchies stand about 11 to 13 inches tall. A male Boerboel stands 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder, so a Frenchie standing next to a Boerboel is looking the Boerboel square in the elbow.
Temperament and guarding style
The AKC calls French Bulldogs "smart, social, and affectionate companions" that "can serve as effective watchdogs, thanks to their alert nature," and adds that "they can be stubborn." A Frenchie will absolutely tell you someone is at the door. It may then ask that person for a treat. The Boerboel is quieter about it. The AKC Boerboel standard describes a dog that "should recognize a threat or lack thereof" and is "loving with children and family." The Frenchie is the doorbell. The Boerboel is the door.

Training and handling
Both breeds are smart and both have opinions. A stubborn Frenchie can be picked up and carried out of the situation. A stubborn 180 lb Boerboel cannot, which is why our puppies start leash manners, handling and calm behavior early.
Our puppies start that work early through Cold River HomeStart™, the early foundation every Cold River puppy receives, and our Boerboel training FAQ covers house training, leash work, mouthing and more.
Exercise, work and performance
The AKC says Frenchies "don't require constant stimulation or frequent exercise," and that short daily walks or playtime are enough. Their short faces also make them "less tolerant of heat and strenuous exercise." A Boerboel needs daily exercise and real work. For scale: the 22,039 lb pulled by Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday is roughly the weight of 787 French Bulldogs at the 28 lb maximum. We do not recommend recruiting 787 Frenchies to check our math.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
The AKC gives the Frenchie a life expectancy of about 10 to 12 years, a little longer than the 9 to 11 years we see in Boerboels. The AKC also warns that Frenchies are "poor swimmers and can easily drown," so they should never be left alone around water. Keep both breeds lean, and keep the Frenchie out of the pool. Common questions
How many French Bulldogs equal one Boerboel?
At the 28 lb maximum in the AKC French Bulldog standard, a 150 to 200 lb Boerboel weighs about the same as five to seven Frenchies.
Can a Boerboel and a French Bulldog live together?
They can, with careful introductions and supervision. The size gap is big, so even friendly play from a Boerboel puppy can hurt a small dog. Supervise every interaction until you know how they get along.
Which breed is more popular?
The French Bulldog, by a mile. The AKC ranked it the most popular breed in the United States for 2025. The Boerboel is fine being the best-kept secret in the room.
