Short answer: The Kangal and the Boerboel are both serious guardians, but they guard in different ways. The Kangal is a tall, lean livestock guardian from Turkey that lives with the flock and works on its own against wolves and bears. The Boerboel is a heavier mastiff-type guardian from South Africa that stays close to its people and protects home and family. The Kangal is taller. The Boerboel is more heavily muscled.

Boerboel height comes from the AKC breed standard and weight from the AKC breed weight chart. Typical lifespan reflects what we see in the breed. Kangal figures come from the breed standards and AKC resources listed under Sources.

Size and build

The Kangal is the taller dog. The UKC standard puts males at 29 to 33 inches and 110 to 145 lb. A male Boerboel stands 24 to 27 inches, but the AKC lists the breed at 150 to 200 lb. So the Kangal is built for height, reach and covering ground. The Boerboel is built lower and heavier, with more muscle and bone.

Temperament and guarding style

A Kangal is bred to make its own decisions out in a pasture, often far from any person. The UKC standard describes it as "alert, territorial, and defensive" and "generally reserved with strangers unless the owner is present." A Boerboel is bred to work alongside its family. It wants to be with its people, reads their cues and guards the home they share. Both are watchful with strangers and both need early socialization.

More on how Boerboels behave with family, children and visitors is in our Boerboel temperament FAQ.

Training and handling

Livestock guardians like the Kangal are famously independent, and obedience is rarely their strength. A Boerboel is also strong-willed, but it is more people-focused and responds well to consistent structure, which makes it easier to bring into public, into the house and into dog sports.

Our puppies start that work early through Cold River HomeStart™, the early foundation every Cold River puppy receives, and our Boerboel training FAQ covers house training, leash work, mouthing and more.

Exercise, work and performance

If you need a dog to live with goats or sheep and handle predators on its own, the Kangal was made for that. If you want a guardian that lives in the house, travels with you and can compete in strength sports like weight pull, the Boerboel is the better match.

Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.

Health and lifespan

The Kangal has a lighter frame for its height. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years. Ask any breeder about hip and elbow screening on the parents. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.

Which breed is right for you?

Choose a Boerboel if:

  • You want a family and home guardian that lives indoors with you

  • You want a dog that works with its handler and can do dog sports

  • You want more muscle and mass in a lower frame

Choose a Kangal if:

  • You need a guardian to live full-time with livestock

  • You have large acreage and predator pressure

  • You want a taller, leaner dog that works independently

Whichever breed you choose, pick a breeder who can show you health results and what their dogs actually do. Our guide on how to choose a Boerboel breeder covers what to ask.

Common questions

Is a Kangal bigger than a Boerboel?

A Kangal is usually taller, with males at 29 to 33 inches. A Boerboel is usually heavier, at 150 to 200 lb according to the AKC.

Can a Boerboel guard livestock?

Boerboels were developed as all-around farm dogs and many are good around livestock when raised with them. A dedicated flock guardian that lives with the animals full-time is the Kangal's specialty.

Which breed is better with family?

The Boerboel is more family-oriented by design. The AKC standard describes it as "loving with children and family." The Kangal is devoted to its charges but more independent.
