Size and build
The heights overlap. The AKC sets male German Shepherds at 24 to 26 inches and male Boerboels at 24 to 27 inches. But a German Shepherd is longer than tall and much lighter, at 50 to 90 lb. A Boerboel is a heavy-boned mastiff at 150 to 200 lb.
Temperament and guarding style
The AKC calls the German Shepherd "dogkind's finest all-purpose worker." Shepherds are loyal, confident and want a job from their handler. The Boerboel is more of a natural guardian than a working partner. It is calm at home, watchful of strangers and protective of its people and property.
More on how Boerboels behave with family, children and visitors is in our Boerboel temperament FAQ.
Training and handling
German Shepherds are among the easiest large breeds to train for obedience and complex tasks. Boerboels are smart and eager to please their own family, but more independent and stubborn. A Boerboel owner has to win respect early and keep the rules consistent.
Our puppies start that work early through Cold River HomeStart™, the early foundation every Cold River puppy receives, and our Boerboel training FAQ covers house training, leash work, mouthing and more.
Exercise, work and performance
A German Shepherd needs a lot of daily exercise and mental work, or it will invent its own. A Boerboel needs daily exercise and structure, and its sport is strength. Boerboels hold the heaviest documented weight-pull results in the sport.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
German Shepherds can be affected by hip and elbow dysplasia and by degenerative myelopathy, a spinal disease the AKC describes in detail. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years and should also be screened for hips and elbows. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.

Common questions
Is a Boerboel a better guard dog than a German Shepherd?
They guard differently. A Boerboel is a natural territorial guardian. A German Shepherd is a trained working partner. For an untrained family guardian, the Boerboel's instincts are stronger. For trained protection work, Shepherds have a long track record.
Which sheds more?
The German Shepherd, by a lot. It has a double coat. The Boerboel's coat is short and smooth.
Is a Boerboel bigger than a German Shepherd?
Yes. The heights overlap, but a Boerboel weighs 150 to 200 lb and a German Shepherd 50 to 90 lb, according to the AKC weight chart.
