Size and build
The FCI standard sets male Dutch Shepherds at 57 to 62 cm, about 22.5 to 24.5 inches, and the AKC weight chart lists the breed at 42 to 75 lb. A male Boerboel stands 24 to 27 inches and weighs 150 to 200 lb. The Boerboel is more than twice as heavy.
Temperament and guarding style
The AKC describes the Dutch Shepherd as "lively, athletic, alert and intelligent," and notes that it can "have a mind of its own." Dutchies are high-energy and want work. The Boerboel is calmer at home, and its guarding is more about territory and family than about working for a handler.
More on how Boerboels behave with family, children and visitors is in our Boerboel temperament FAQ.
Training and handling
Dutch Shepherds are very trainable and popular in protection sports, though a little more independent than a Malinois. Boerboels are also independent and need consistency and early socialization. Training a giant guardian is more about manners, control and calm behavior than about sport drive.

Exercise, work and performance
A Dutch Shepherd needs a lot of daily exercise and mental work. A Boerboel needs daily exercise and structure and does well in strength events.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
Dutch Shepherds are a medium-large breed and generally live longer than giant breeds. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.
