Size and build
A Doberman is actually taller. The AKC standard puts males at 26 to 28 inches, against 24 to 27 inches for a male Boerboel. But a Doberman is square and lean at 60 to 100 lb, while a Boerboel weighs 150 to 200 lb. Picture a sprinter next to a heavyweight.
Temperament and guarding style
The AKC describes the Doberman as "fearless and vigilant" with "keen intelligence." Dobermans tend to stay very close to their handler and respond fast. A Boerboel is more laid back in the house and more deliberate. It watches, reads the situation and acts when it decides there is a threat. Both bond deeply with their family.
More on how Boerboels behave with family, children and visitors is in our Boerboel temperament FAQ.
Training and handling
Dobermans are among the most trainable working breeds and excel in obedience and protection sports. Boerboels learn quickly too, but they are more independent and need an owner who stays consistent through adolescence. Both breeds need early socialization.
Our puppies start that work early through Cold River HomeStart™, the early foundation every Cold River puppy receives, and our Boerboel training FAQ covers house training, leash work, mouthing and more.
Exercise, work and performance
A Doberman needs a lot of running and mental work every day. A Boerboel needs daily exercise and structure, but less sustained running. Its strength is power, which is why the breed does so well in weight pull.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
Heart disease, especially dilated cardiomyopathy, is a well-known concern in Dobermans, and the Doberman Pinscher Club of America runs a longevity registry for dogs that reach 10 years. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years. With either breed, ask the breeder for health screening on both parents. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.

Which is easier to train?
