Boerboel vs Belgian Malinois: Drive, Size and Which to Choose

Short answer: The Belgian Malinois is a 40 to 80 lb, very high-drive working dog used by police and military units around the world. The Boerboel is a 150 to 200 lb guardian that is calmer at home and built for power. A Malinois needs a job every day. A Boerboel needs structure and exercise but can settle in the house. They are very different dogs to live with.

Size and build
The heights are close, 24 to 26 inches for a male Malinois and 24 to 27 inches for a male Boerboel. A Malinois is square, light and fast, with males at 60 to 80 lb. A Boerboel weighs 150 to 200 lb.
Temperament and guarding style
The AKC describes the Malinois as "smart, confident, and versatile" and warns that "to deny a Mal activity and the pleasure of your company is to deprive him of his very reasons for being." Most Malinois are intense from morning to night. A well-bred Boerboel has an off switch. It can work hard, then lie down in the house and watch.

Training and handling
The Malinois is one of the most trainable dogs alive, and one of the most demanding. It learns fast, including bad habits. The Boerboel learns well and is eager to please its family, but it is more independent and less driven by the work itself.

Exercise, work and performance
A Malinois needs hours of physical and mental work each day. A Boerboel needs daily exercise, training and a purpose, and it excels in strength events like weight pull.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
The AKC lists the Malinois lifespan as 14 to 16 years, long for its size. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years, typical of a giant breed. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.
