Size and build
The AKC Anatolian standard calls for males "from 29 inches" weighing "110 to 150 pounds," and females from 27 inches at 80 to 120 lb. Male Boerboels stand 24 to 27 inches, and the AKC weight chart lists the breed at 150 to 200 lb. The Anatolian is the taller, rangier dog built to cover ground. The Boerboel is shorter and much more heavily muscled.
Temperament and guarding style
The AKC standard describes the Anatolian as "Alert and intelligent, calm and observant," and "Highly territorial, he is a natural guard," adding that "Responsiveness with animation is not characteristic of the breed." It was bred to make its own decisions with a flock, often far from people. The Boerboel was bred to work closely with its family. The AKC Boerboel standard calls it "loving with children and family" and asks for a dog that "should recognize a threat or lack thereof."
More on how Boerboels behave with family, children and visitors is in our Boerboel temperament FAQ.
Training and handling
Anatolians are independent thinkers, and the AKC standard says "Overhandling would be discouraged." Recall and off-leash reliability are hard with most livestock guardians. Boerboels are strong-willed but more handler-focused, which makes structured training and sports easier.
Our puppies start that work early through Cold River HomeStart™, the early foundation every Cold River puppy receives, and our Boerboel training FAQ covers house training, leash work, mouthing and more.
Exercise, work and performance
The AKC says the Anatolian was "Developed through a set of very demanding circumstances for a purely utilitarian purpose" and is "a working guard dog without equal, with a unique ability to protect livestock." It is happiest with land and a job. The Boerboel guarded the farm, the family and the stock, and its power suits strength sports like weight pull.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
The AKC lists the Anatolian Shepherd's life expectancy at 11 to 13 years. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years. Both are large breeds, so hip and elbow screening and bloat awareness matter. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.

Whichever breed you choose, pick a breeder who can show you health results and what their dogs actually do. Our guide on how to choose a Boerboel breeder covers what to ask.
Common questions
Is an Anatolian Shepherd bigger than a Boerboel?
Taller, but usually lighter. AKC Anatolian males start at 29 inches and weigh 110 to 150 lb. Boerboel males stand 24 to 27 inches and the AKC lists the breed at 150 to 200 lb.
Which is better for livestock?
The Anatolian Shepherd. It was bred specifically to live with and protect flocks. Boerboels were all-around farm dogs and can live with stock, but they are best known as homestead and family guardians.
Is the Anatolian Shepherd the same as the Kangal?
They are closely related Turkish guardian breeds, but registries treat them differently. See our Boerboel vs Kangal comparison for that breed.
