Boerboel vs American Bulldog: Size, Drive and Key Differences

Short answer: The American Bulldog and the Boerboel both come from working farm dogs, and both will step up for their family. The difference is size and style. The UKC standard puts male American Bulldogs at 22 to 27 inches, and the AKC weight chart lists the breed at about 75 lb. The AKC lists the Boerboel at 150 to 200 lb. The American Bulldog is the quicker, bouncier farm athlete. The Boerboel is the bigger, calmer guardian that would rather stand in the doorway than chase the cow.

Size and build
On height alone these two can look like cousins. The UKC standard puts male American Bulldogs at 22 to 27 inches and females at 20 to 25 inches, while male Boerboels stand 24 to 27 inches. The scale tells a different story. The AKC weight chart lists the American Bulldog at about 75 lb and the Boerboel at 150 to 200 lb. A big male American Bulldog is a solid dog. A big male Boerboel is a solid dog plus most of another one.
Temperament and guarding style
The UKC standard calls the American Bulldog "a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder," and notes that young dogs can be standoffish with strangers until about 18 months. The AKC Boerboel standard describes a dog that is "calm, stable and confident" and "should recognize a threat or lack thereof." Both breeds are loyal to their people. The American Bulldog tends to bring more bounce and more go. The Boerboel tends to watch first and then decide.

Training and handling
Both breeds are smart, strong and capable of selective hearing when something more interesting is going on. The American Bulldog's speed and drive mean recall and impulse control need real work. With a Boerboel the same lesson weighs twice as much, so we start leash manners, handling and calm behavior before the dog is big enough to argue about it.

Exercise, work and performance
The UKC standard explains that the original working Bulldog was preserved by working-class immigrants in the American South, who used it for a wide range of farm jobs. By the end of World War II the breed was almost extinct, and John D. Johnson, Alan Scott and other breeders brought it back. The American Bulldog is quick and agile for its size. The Boerboel is built for power, with a heavier frame and more muscle per inch, which is exactly what weight pull rewards.
Performance is how we measure the breed at Cold River. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday both pulled 22,039 lb at a UPF event on May 9, 2026, the heaviest pull in any weight-pull federation's published results. Sun competes at about 164 lb and Wednesday at about 186 lb. The full results and sources are on our world record page, and our dog weight pulling guide explains how the sport works.
Health and lifespan
Both breeds need lean condition and joint care while they grow. The UKC standard does not set a lifespan for the American Bulldog. Boerboels generally live 9 to 11 years. Ask any breeder for health results on both parents. For growth, lifespan and bloat prevention in Boerboels, see our Boerboel size, growth and health FAQ.
