Getting Your Boerboel Puppy Home to Virginia
For most of Virginia, pickup is a day's drive from our home base in the northeastern United States. Northern Virginia families are closest. Families in Hampton Roads or Southwest Virginia have a longer trip and sometimes choose private ground transportation instead.
Raising a Boerboel in Virginia
Virginia has a lot of rural land, and that suits the breed's history. The Boerboel was developed as an all-around farm guardian in South Africa. A guardian still needs training, though. Good fencing, early socialization with people and other animals, and clear house rules matter more than acreage. HomeStart starts that work before your puppy ever leaves us.
Virginia Dog Laws and the Boerboel
Virginia is clear on breed. Va. Code §3.2-6540 says no animal shall be found by a court to be a dangerous dog "solely because it is a particular breed," and §3.2-6540.1 adds that "the ownership of a particular breed of canine or canine crossbreed" is not prohibited. Private landlords, HOAs and insurers can still set their own rules.
Laws change, and this is general information, not legal advice. Our Boerboel ownership costs and laws FAQ covers insurance and housing questions in more detail.
What Comes With Every Cold River Puppy
Every Cold River puppy goes through Cold River HomeStart™, our early foundation program: crate and leash introduction, handling, household routines and socialization with people and animals. Puppies go home with a 16-month health guarantee and lifetime breeder support. Families who want more structured training before go-home can add the optional Cold River StrongStart™ program.
Performance is how we measure the breed. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday have each pulled 22,039 lb in UPF competition. The results and sources are on our world record page.
