Cold River Boerboels is a performance-focused Boerboel breeder based in northeastern Pennsylvania, so Pennsylvania is home ground for us. Most Pennsylvania families can pick up in person, meet the adult dogs and see how our puppies are raised. This page covers what is specific to Pennsylvania: getting your puppy home, raising a Boerboel through Pennsylvania seasons, dog licensing and what state law says. Our Boerboel puppies available nationwide page explains the process for families in other states.

Getting Your Boerboel Puppy Home to Pennsylvania

Because we are based in northeastern Pennsylvania, most Pennsylvania families can drive to us for pickup and be home the same day. That includes families searching from York, Lancaster, Berks County, the Lehigh Valley, Harrisburg and the Philadelphia area. Western Pennsylvania is the longest drive in the state, but it is still a realistic pickup trip. Pickup is the best way to meet the adult dogs, see where your puppy was raised and ask us questions face to face.

Raising a Boerboel in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania gives you all four seasons. A Boerboel's short, dense coat handles winter well with a warm, dry place to sleep and sensible limits in bitter cold. Wipe paws after walks on salted roads and keep antifreeze out of reach. Summers turn hot and humid, so move training and exercise to early morning or evening and keep shade and water available. In farm country, remember that the Boerboel was developed as a farm guardian in South Africa. Good fencing and early socialization with people and other animals matter more than acreage, and HomeStart starts that work before your puppy leaves us.

Pennsylvania Dog Laws and the Boerboel

Pennsylvania's Dog Law is breed-neutral. Under 3 P.S. §459-507-A(c), a local ordinance "may not prohibit or otherwise limit a specific breed of dog," and §459-507-A(d) says no liability policy or surety bond issued under the act may "prohibit coverage from any specific breed of dog." Every dog also needs a license. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture says dogs must be licensed when you buy or adopt them or at 3 months of age, whichever comes first, and renewed by January 1 each year. Licenses come from your county treasurer, or from the city in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Erie, Altoona and Harrisburg. The fine for an unlicensed dog is up to $500 plus court costs, and dogs 3 months and older need a current rabies vaccination. Landlords, HOAs and homeowners insurers can still have their own rules, so check yours.

Laws change, and this is general information, not legal advice. Our Boerboel ownership costs and laws FAQ covers insurance and housing questions in more detail.

What Comes With Every Cold River Puppy

Every Cold River puppy goes through Cold River HomeStart™, our early foundation program: crate and leash introduction, handling, household routines and socialization with people and animals. Puppies go home with a 16-month health guarantee and lifetime breeder support. Families who want more structured training before go-home can add the optional Cold River StrongStart™ program.

Performance is how we measure the breed. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday have each pulled 22,039 lb in UPF competition. The results and sources are on our world record page.
