Getting Your Boerboel Puppy Home to Florida
Florida is roughly a two-day drive from the northeastern United States, depending on where you live in the state. Many Florida families choose a flight nanny, who flies with the puppy in the cabin, or private ground transportation down the East Coast. Families who want to meet the adult dogs and see them work can drive up for pickup.
Raising a Boerboel in Florida
Florida heat comes with humidity, and the AKC says to "pay attention to weather conditions, including temperature, humidity, and sun exposure." The AKC lists puppies among the dogs that face increased heatstroke risk, notes that heatstroke can set in once a dog's internal temperature passes 105.8°F, and warns never to leave a dog in a parked car, "even for a short time." For a big, muscular puppy in Florida, that means training and exercise in the early morning or evening, shade and fresh water in the yard, and a cool indoor spot to rest. Two Florida-specific tips from us: teach your puppy where the steps are if you have a pool, and build your hurricane plan around a dog that will weigh 150 lb or more as an adult. That means a crate that fits, a vehicle that fits the crate, and a pet-friendly place to go.
Florida Dog Laws and the Boerboel
Florida made a big change in 2023. Senate Bill 942, signed on June 16, 2023, bars local governments and public housing authorities from banning dogs or labeling them dangerous based on breed, size or weight. Florida's dangerous-dog law, Florida Statutes §767.14, already required local rules to be breed-neutral, and the 2023 law removed the exception that let older local ordinances stand. Private landlords, condo associations and insurers can still set their own rules, so check before your puppy comes home.
Laws change, and this is general information, not legal advice. Our Boerboel ownership costs and laws FAQ covers insurance and housing questions in more detail.
