Getting Your Boerboel Puppy Home to California
California is a cross-country trip from the northeastern United States. Driving it means several long days each way, so most California families choose a flight nanny, who flies with the puppy in the cabin. Private ground transportation can also be discussed. We plan the timing around the puppy's age and readiness, not just the calendar.
Raising a Boerboel in California
California has several climates. A Boerboel on the coast deals with mild weather most of the year, while one in the Central Valley, the Inland Empire or the desert needs a real heat plan. The AKC lists puppies among the dogs that face increased heatstroke risk, notes that heatstroke can set in once a dog's internal temperature passes 105.8°F, and warns never to leave a dog in a parked car, "even for a short time." For a big, muscular puppy in inland California, that means training and exercise in the early morning or evening, shade and fresh water in the yard, and a cool indoor spot to rest. We also keep our puppies lean while they grow, and our guide to growing pains in Boerboels explains why.
California Dog Laws and the Boerboel
California Food and Agricultural Code §31683 says that, except as provided in Health and Safety Code §122331, "no program regulating any dog shall be specific as to breed." That exception lets cities and counties adopt breed-specific spay, neuter and breeding requirements. If your city or county has one, it can affect when your puppy is spayed or neutered. Our guide to spay and neuter timing in large-breed dogs explains why we prefer to wait on large-breed dogs. Landlords and insurers can also set their own rules.
Laws change, and this is general information, not legal advice. Our Boerboel ownership costs and laws FAQ covers insurance and housing questions in more detail.
What Comes With Every Cold River Puppy
Every Cold River puppy goes through Cold River HomeStart™, our early foundation program: crate and leash introduction, handling, household routines and socialization with people and animals. Puppies go home with a 16-month health guarantee and lifetime breeder support. Families who want more structured training before go-home can add the optional Cold River StrongStart™ program.
Performance is how we measure the breed. Cold River's Sun Wukong and Cold River's Mr. Wednesday have each pulled 22,039 lb in UPF competition. The results and sources are on our world record page.
